Author:  A native of Denmark, Anne Fortier has shared a lifelong love of Shakespeare and Italy with her mother.   For years, they traveled to Verona to visit Romeo and Juliet’s balcony—until a whim took them to Siena instead.   When they discovered it was the real setting of the original story that inspired Romeo and Juliet, the novel was born—and so was an unusual collaboration. While Anne wrote in the U.S., her mother did research in Italy, serving as her “eyes” in Siena.  In their hands, this medieval city comes to life as a vibrant, passionate, and richly imagined character in its own right.

“Being Juliet, I suppose I should have seen it coming. I so wanted to believe that, this time around, it would not be the same old lamentable tragedy ... but you can’t fool the Bard.” So begins Anne Fortier’s captivating U.S. debut JULIET (Ballantine Hardcover; August 17, 2010), a beautifully written novel about a young woman who discovers that her own fate is irrevocably tied to literature’s greatest star-crossed lovers. “Boldly imagined, brilliantly plotted, beautifully described, JULIET will carry you spellbound until the gripping end. An astonishing achievement.” ––Susan Vreeland, New York Times bestselling author of Girl in Hyacinth Blue “A feast of myth, history, and tantalizing indulgences—I was swept away, blown away, and taken for ransom. Anne Fortier breathes new life into the Shakespearean tragedy we thought we knew. I fell in love with JULIET all over again.” ––Jamie Ford, New York Times bestselling author of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet
