ABOUT KAREN THOMPSON WALKER: Karen Thompson Walker is the Author of The Age of Miracles, which was a New York Times Bestseller. She was born and raised in San Diego and is a graduate of UCLA and the Columbia MFA program. A former Editor at Simon & Schuster, she wrote The Age of Miracles in the mornings before work, sometimes while riding the subway. She currently lives in Iowa with her husband.
ABOUT THE AGE OF MIRACLES: “It’s never the disasters you see coming that finally come to pass, it’s the ones you don’t expect at all,” says Julia, in this spellbinding novel of catastrophe and survival by a superb new writer. Luminous, suspenseful, unforgettable, The Age of Miracles tells the haunting and beautiful story of Julia and her family as they struggle to live in a time of extraordinary change.
On an ordinary Saturday in a California suburb, Julia awakes to discover that something has happened to the rotation of the earth. The days and nights are growing longer and longer; gravity is affected; the birds, the tides, human behavior, and cosmic rhythms are thrown into disarray. In a world that seems filled with danger and loss, Julia also must face surprising developments in herself, and in her personal world, divisions widening between her parents, strange behavior by her friends, the pain and vulnerability of first love, a growing sense of isolation, and a surprising, rebellious new strength. With crystalline prose and the indelible magic of a born storyteller, Karen Thompson Walker gives us a breathtaking portrait of people finding ways to go on in an ever-evolving world.
ABOUT KATE ALCOTT: Kate Alcott is the pen name of Patricia O'Brien: an Award-Winning Journalist, Novelist and Author of at least 7 Books. For 10 Years she worked as Political Correspondent and Columnist in the Washington Bureau of the Knight-Ridder Newspapers. She has been a Commentator for CBS-TV's Morning Show, CBS-Radio's Spectrum series, and hosted a local Chicago Television Public Affairs Program. She has written for a number of Magazines, from Harper's Bazaar to Esquire, including reviews for The New York Times Sunday Book Section. She has four grown daughters and is married to Journalist Frank Mankiewicz. She lives in Washington, D.C.
ABOUT THE DRESSMAKER: Tess, an aspiring seamstress, thinks she's had an incredibly lucky break when she is hired by famous designer Lady Lucile Duff Gordon to be a personal maid on the Titanic's doomed voyage. Once on board, Tess catches the eye of two men, one a roughly-hewn but kind sailor and the other an enigmatic Chicago millionaire. But on the fourth night, disaster strikes. Amidst the chaos and desperate urging of two very different suitors, Tess is one of the last people allowed on a lifeboat. Tess’s sailor also manages to survive unharmed, witness to Lady Duff Gordon’s questionable actions during the tragedy. Others, including the gallant Midwestern tycoon, are not so lucky. On dry land, rumors about the survivors begin to circulate, and Lady Duff Gordon quickly becomes the subject of media scorn and later, the hearings on the Titanic. Set against a historical tragedy but told from a completely fresh angle, The Dressmaker is an atmospheric delight filled with all the period's glitz and glamour, all the raw feelings of a national tragedy and all the contradictory emotions of young love.
