Peter Slevin will discuss his new biography Michelle Obama: A Life

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Peter Slevin will discuss his New Biography Michelle Obama: A Life.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Peter Slevin spent a decade on the national staff of The Washington Post before joining Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism, where he is an associate professor.  He has written extensively about Barack and Michelle Obama, as well as on political campaigns and policy debates from one end of the country to the other.  Slevin graduated from Princeton and Oxford.  He lives with his family in Evanston, Illinois.

ABOUT THE NEW BOOK:  MICHELLE OBAMA: A Life by is the first full, exhaustively researched and reported account of her life—and the first to explore how the greater context of race and gender in America have affected and motivated her.  Meticulously tracing Michelle’s life from her family’s history (dating back to slavery) through the White House today, MICHELLE OBAMA: A Life provides a portrait of a woman who—like all working mothers— has continually struggled to balance her duties as a professional with those as a mother and a wife.  We see her reluctance to enter into political life and what she has given up, personally and professionally, for Barack’s career.  But Slevin also shows how Michelle has smartly and effectively carved out a role in the White House as a denouncer of inequalities, doggedly working to “unstack the deck” for minorities and the poor, and that she is, contrary to popular consensus, “the most consistently political first lady since Eleanor Roosevelt.”  To understand Barack as POTUS, you need to know Michelle as FLOTUS—and Slevin’s biography brings us the full measure of the life and work of this truly exceptional woman.
