Phoebe Unterman discusses Through Eva's Eyes, a true Holocaust story, in conversation with her grandmother Eva Unterman
EVENT: First-time author/illustrator Phoebe Unterman discusses her powerful book Through Eva's Eyes in conversation with her grandmother Eva Unterman, whose Holocaust survival story is the subject of the book. Told from the perspective of a small child, the children's book Through Eva's Eyes describes the Holocaust in Nazi-occupied Poland. Written and illustrated by Phoebe Unterman, the book is historically accurate and emotionally powerful, while still appropriate for a young audience.
AUTHOR: Phoebe Unterman was born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1992. She has lived most of her life just across the state line in Kansas. She always loved to read stories and draw, and when she heard her grandmother’s Holocaust story for the first time, she thought of it as one of hope. Most stories she heard about the war had been about adults, and the fact that her grandmother remembered some of what happened to her made her want to tell the story using Eva’s own words. She has earned numerous writing, editing and design awards for her work on her high school newspaper, and is currently attending the Annenberg School of Journalism at the University of Southern California
THE LEGACY: Phoebe will donate a portion of the book’s proceeds to two programs that are important to her. Because history can help us proceed in a forward, positive direction, a story such as Eva’s is important when used in an educational setting. The Eva Unterman Holocaust Education Fund, in Memory of Dawid Sierakowiak, by the Jewish Federation of Tulsa, grants teachers and other educators the funds to study the Holocaust in order to have the tools for teaching it effectively and passing on its invaluable lessons in the classroom.

The other organization important to Phoebe is Invisible Children, because it is an example of trying to come to the aid of victims of a contemporary genocide, an attempt to eliminate a generation of children because of intolerance, hate and ignorance, not unlike the situation which surrounded Eva and her family in Poland. Because of the maltreatment to which they are subjected, Phoebe feels there should be some attention brought to the plight of these children.
