ABOUT DELICIOUS!: A NOVEL:  At the heart of this Book is a memorable character—Billie Breslin—who leaves California for New York to start a new job at a food magazine and to begin a new life, leaving behind her family, and a heartbreaking mystery about her beloved sister.  Reichl carries the reader to the colorful world of downtown New York restaurateurs and artisanal purveyors, and from the bustling food shop in Little Italy where Billie works on weekends to a hidden room in the magazine’s library where she discovers intriguing letters written by a girl in Ohio to James Beard over 50 years ago.  Little does Billy know that these letters will soon change her life forever.  Weaving together a love story, a family tragedy, and the search to uncover secrets from the past and the present, Delicious!: A Novel explores themes of reinvention, identity, and independence.  Ruth Reichl has given us a beautiful coming of age story and has proven once again that food defines us and brings us together.  It is an exciting and fun novel, even as it eloquently makes the case that it is those closest to us who most often elude us.

Chef Anne Burrell will appear at Best of Kansas City Chefs "Harvest for Harvesters"

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Food Network Star, Bestselling Author and Chef Anne Burrell will appear at Best of Kansas City Chefs "Harvest for Harvesters" to celebrate the Publication of her New Cookbook Own Your Kitchen: Recipes to Inspire & Empower.

ABOUT ANNE BURRELL:  Anne Burrell is The New York Times Bestselling Author of Cook Like a Rock Star.  She was the Host for many years of Food Network's Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, is Co-Host of Worst Cooks in America, and Host of Chef Wanted with Anne Burrell.  A graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, Anne worked at Lidia Bastianich's Felidia and Peter Hoffman's Savoy and taught at the Institute of Culinary Education.  She lives in New York City.

ABOUT OWN YOUR KITCHEN:  Owning your kitchen is about being in charge when you cook—understanding how flavors work together, how to improvise with ingredients you have on hand, and, above all, how to feel confident and stress-free when making meals. In Own Your Kitchen, Anne Burrell gets you in that groove by sharing the recipes she makes when she's relaxed and cooking at home. Anne has designed these 100 recipes to get you comfortable with dozens of essential techniques—like how to create a perfect omelet, how to butterfly a chicken for an easy roast, and how to bake a focaccia to doll up any meal. Along the way, she offers priceless tips: such as what can be made ahead (like her garlic-ginger-soy-citrus marinade that can be used with just about anything or a freezer staple like fish stock) or how to coax flavor out of a chicken with a garlic rubdown. More than anything, though, Own Your Kitchen will build your repertoire with impressive twists on classics like Carbonara Frittata, Olive Oil–Poached Salmon, Grilled Hanger Steak with anchovy-butter sauce, and—maybe best of all—Hawaiian Pork Roast. Anne will walk you through her seasonal faves, like Zucchini Cannelloni, Wilted Romaine Salad with Toasted Hazelnuts (great crunch!), and Pumpkin-Ricotta Pancakes with Chunky Apple-Raisin Sauce. When at the farmer's market, you'll keep in mind her Spring Veggie Stew with bright asparagus and sugar snap peas (or, as Anne suggests, any combo of spring veg) and the super easy Crispy Crunchy Kale Chips. These are recipes that will work every time. And with Anne by your side, reminding you to set up, taste, season, check, and be patient, you'll also get in on the secrets (including tricks for bouncing back from mistakes) that she's picked up over the years in some of the best restaurant kitchens and from working with people trying to be better home cooks, just like you.

Bobby Deen, Food Network Star will host a Dinner inspired by his New Cookbook, From Mama's Table to Mine

EVENT:  START THE NEW YEAR WITH A HEARTY, HEALTHY MEAL!  Join us for an evening of great food and conversation with Cooking Channel and Food Network Star Bobby Deen, celebrating the Publication of his New Cookbook From Mama's Table to Mine: Everybody's Favorite Comfort Foods at 350 Calories or Less.

Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books and Seasons 52 Fresh | Grill on The Country Club Plaza

Bobby Deen and his New Bestselling Cookbook From Mama's Table to Mine made the Cover of People Magazine.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Bobby Deen is the son of famous Food Network host and Bestselling Cookbook author Paula Deen.  Bobby, along with his brother Jamie, got his start in the food business back in 1989 when their mom hired them to deliver sandwiches.  The three Deens joined forces to open a restaurant in Savannah, The Lady & Sons.  Bobby is the host of the Cooking Channel’s and Food Network’s Not My Mama’s Meals and a frequent guest on a variety of Food Network shows.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  From beloved food personality Bobby Deen, son of Paula Deen, comes an irresistible New Cookbook featuring 120 recipes of Southern comfort-food classics, all under 350 calories and jam-packed with flavor.  Raised on his mother’s fried chicken and hoecakes, Bobby Deen ultimately found himself, as a young man, twenty-five pounds overweight.  Unwilling to sacrifice any of his favorite foods, Bobby started tweaking the recipes he grew up on, replacing sour cream with nonfat yogurt, using lower-calorie versions of mayonnaise, cream cheese, and other high-calorie items.  Even Paula herself sometimes couldn’t tell the difference between the lo-cal versions and her originals, since the flavor remained top-notch.

Here you’ll find a soup-to-nuts collection of many of the great dishes and flavors you’ve come to enjoy and expect from the Deens, but with a lot fewer calories.  Every recipe has been reviewed and approved by a certified nutritionist.  Yes, you can have your Gooey Less Butter Cake and eat it too, along with such selections a:

It’s a Party Guacamole • Easy Ginger-Glazed Spare Ribs • Yes You Can Mac and Cheese • Cheeseburger Casserole • Old-Fashioned Meatloaf • Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken • Roasted Pork Tenderloin with Apples • Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes • Bittersweet Chocolate Cheesecake • Strawberry Streusel Cake

In addition to all these mouthwatering recipes and 65 full-color photos, you will find before/after fat and calorie counts (so you know just how many calories you’re saving) plus a week’s worth of 1,500 calorie/day menus, celebration menus, healthy prep tips, weight-loss shortcuts, ideas for stocking a healthy pantry/fridge, and a section on easy high-fat / low-fat ingredient swaps.

Wine Tasting and Discussion at Seasons 52: Randall Heskett, PhD and Joel Butler will discuss Divine Vintage

EVENT:  FOOD, WINE AND HISTORY!  Randall Heskett and Joel Butler will offer groundbreaking news explaining what we now know about wine’s origins, and how wine marked the beginning of civilization, culture and religion.  During the days of Moses, Abraham, and Jesus, religious ritual centered on wine and the mystical powers worshippers believed it possessed.  Fascinated by the long tradition found in the Holy Land, wine expert Joel Butler and biblical scholar Randall Heskett teamed up to uncover how the millennia old wine making practices transformed the ancient Middle East and how it affects religious worship today.  In this wide-ranging narrative, the authors travel back to beginning of Genesis to explore how wine rose to become the center of mankind’s spiritual life.  Weaving together the history of ancient vineyards with passages from the Old and New Testament, Divine Vintage takes the reader on a remarkable odyssey through Biblical wine country.  Full of vivid descriptions of the terrain and ancient grapes, as well as intoxicating archaeological and scriptural discoveries, this is a compelling journey into the spiritual heart of the Judeo-Christian religion.  Butler and Heskett also bring the journey up to the present day, traveling to meet the master vintners reestablishing forgotten vineyards and recreating the wines of this fascinating era with ancient techniques.  Richly illustrated and with enchanting tasting notes of regional wines from Israel, Jordan, Turkey, and others, this is a breathtaking look at the wines of the holy land.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:  Randall Heskett, PhD is a Biblical Scholar with Advance Degrees in Old Testament & Hebrew Bible from Yale University and the University of Toronto.  He has taught at the University of Toronto, Queen’s University, and Denver Seminary, among others.  A former wine importer, he has written several Books and Articles, including Reading the Book of Isaiah: Destruction and Lament in the Holy Cities.  Heskett is the President of Boulder University and lives outside of Boulder, Colorado.

Joel Butler is the President of the Institute of Masters of Wine, North America and one of the first two resident Masters of Wine in the North America.  He has worked in the wine industry for 40 years in many different capacities, especially education.  A highly regarded Wine Judge for decades, he most recently served as a Senior Judge at the International Wine Challenge, and Decanter World Wine Awards in London.  Butler has written on wine for International Wine Cellar, The Sunday Times, The Independent, The I-Wine Review and numerous other wine publications.  He lives in Seattle, Washington.
