Julene Bair will discuss her Kansas farm life and New Book, The Ogallala Road: A Memoir of Love and Reckoning

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Julene Bair will discuss her Kansas farm life and her New Book, The Ogallala Road: A Memoir of Love and Reckoning.  This Event is Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books and Kansas Land Trust.

ABOUT JULENE BAIR:  Julene Bair is a Graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop and the Iowa Nonfiction Writing Program.  Her essay collection, One Degree West, won several regional awards and was a finalist for the Mountains and Plains Booksellers Award.  She has taught at the University of Wyoming and the University of Iowa.  She lives in Longmont, Colorado.

ABOUT The Ogallala Road: A Memoir of Love and Reckoning:  In this thoughtful consideration of life at a crossroads, Bair tackles questions about single parenthood, romance, and the monumental task of determining the future of the family farm.  Bair grew up steeped deeply in Kansas farming, but her life has taken her far away in more ways than one.  A woman facing midlife alone with a teenage son, she finds herself falling into an unexpected love affair at the same time her father's death forces changes to the family farm.  In the midst of the more prosaic tasks of land management, she recounts her long concerns with the demands farming places on the land, especially the Ogallala aquifer.  Threaded throughout each chapter are her travels along the Ogallala's path as she puzzles out the changes the water table has suffered and challenges old agricultural traditions that continue to persist in defiance of logic.  Bair's measured approach to her family's ultimate decision about the farm provides readers in a nonrural setting with a thoughtful look into America's heartland.  Book groups will find much to discuss here, from love to family to the big questions we all must face about how we live now.

Haroon K. Ullah will present his New Book, The Bargain from the Bazaar: A Family's Day of Reckoning in Lahore

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Haroon K. Ullah will present his New Book,The Bargain from the Bazaar: A Family's Day of Reckoning in Lahore.  This Event is Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books, Saint Andrew Christian Church and The International Relations Council of Kansas City (IRC) .

ABOUT HAROON K. ULLAH:  Haroon K. Ullah grew up in a small farming community in Washington State and after graduating from Whitman College went on to Harvard's Kennedy School of Government.  He was then hand-selected by Richard Holbrooke for his policy team on Pakistan and Afghanistan and currently serves on Secretary Kerry's Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. State Department, where he focuses on public diplomacy and countering violent extremism.

ABOUT The Bargain from the Bazaar: A Family's Day of Reckoning in Lahore, $25.99 Hardcover, ISBN 9781610391665:  In this breathtaking, atmospheric narrative, Haroon K. Ullah bewitches us with the story of one ordinary middle-class family in Pakistan, who is suddenly caught up in the extraordinary challenges facing the country today.  His incredible story-telling and reporting has received incredible praise from Malala Yousafzai and her father, Eboo Patel, Reza Aslan, Jared Cohen, Peter Bergen, Strobe Talbott and starred reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus.

Awais Reza is a shopkeeper in Lahore's Anarkali Bazaar the largest open market in South Asia whose labyrinthine streets teem with shoppers, rickshaws, and cacophonous music.  But Anarkali's exuberant hubbub cannot conceal the fact that Pakistan is a country at the edge of a precipice.  In recent years, the easy sociability that had once made up this vibrant community has been replaced with doubt and fear.  Old-timers like Awais, who inherited his shop from his father and hopes one day to pass it on to his son, are being shouldered aside by easy money, discount stores, heroin peddlers, and the tyranny of fundamentalists.  Every night before Awais goes to bed, he plugs in his cell phone and hopes.  He hopes that the city will not be plunged into a blackout, that the night will remain calm, that the following morning will bring affluent and happy customers to his shop and, most of all, that his three sons will safely return home.  Each of the boys, though, has a very different vision of their, and Pakistan's, future.

The Bargain from the Bazaar is the product of 8 Years of field research and is an intimate window into ordinary middle-class lives caught in the maelstrom of a nation falling to pieces.  It's an absolutely compelling portrait of a family at risk from a violently changing world on the outside and a growing terror from within.

Jordan D. Metzl, MD, will present The Exercise Cure: A Doctor's All-Natural, No-Pill Prescription for Better Health and Longer Life

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Jordan D. Metzl, MD, will Present his New Book The Exercise Cure: A Doctor's All-Natural, No-Pill Prescription for Better Health and Longer Life.  Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books and The University of Kansas Medical Center.

ABOUT JORDAN D. METZL, MD:  Jordan D. Metzl, MD, is a Graduate of Barstow School and the Author of The Athlete’s Book of Home Remedies and a nationally known Sports Medicine Physician at New York City’s Hospital for Special Surgery.  He appears regularly on the esteemed New York Magazine’s Top Doctors List.  Prior to joining New York City Hospital for Special Surgery, Dr. Metzl completed his Fellowship in Sports Medicine and Dance Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Boston Children’s Hospital.  He lives in New York City.

ABOUT THE EXERCISE CURE:  What if there were a drug to treat every illness, across all body systems, proven potent against heart disease, depression, arthritis, PMS and erectile dysfunction, even in chronic diseases such as asthma, dementia, and certain types of cancer?  What if it had no side effects, was completely free, readily available, and worked for everyone?  Every single person who took it decreased her risk of premature death and raised his quality of life.  Would you want it?  In a healthcare system that spends 17% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP), roughly $2.7 Trillion, mostly on disease treatment, how do we save money and prevent illness?  By increasing the use of the world’s most effective preventive medicine: exercise.  Jordan D. Metzl, MD, explains how everyone can maximize their daily dose in his groundbreaking New Book, The Exercise Cure.  In The Exercise Cure, Dr. Metzl, nationally renowned Sports Medicine Physician offers malady-specific and well-researched exercise prescriptions to help readers stay healthy, heal disease, drop pounds, increase longevity, and transform their lives.  Today’s medical system is largely focused on fixing rather than preventing problems, and many treatments carry significant side effects.  Cholesterol-lowering drugs are linked to frequent muscle and joint problems, anti-hypertensive drugs like Beta-blockers cause headaches and diminished energy, and Prozac and other popular anti-depressant medications carry multiple consequences including sexual dysfunction.  Dr. Metzl knows that exercise is inexpensive, powerful medicine that has benefits in prevention and treatment of disease without disturbing side effects.  Even in older adults, daily exercise has been found to prevent dementia by generating neuron development in the hippocampus, the memory center of the brain. Combining the latest data and his proven motivational skills, Dr. Metzl addresses the common maladies troubling millions.  He discusses our cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurologic, reproductive, and endocrinologic body systems, with special sections on sleep problems and cancer prevention, presenting the science behind the role of exercise as medicine.  Then, he details fun, fat-torching, life-prolonging workouts that can be tailored easily to any fitness level, beginner to advanced, and provides nutritional information, including meal plans for healthy eating and disease prevention, as well.

Terry Wahls, M.D., will present The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Terry Wahls, M.D., will appear In Conversation with Loren Halifax, Fox 4 Morning Show Host, about Terry's New Book The Wahls Protocol: How I Beat Progressive MS Using Paleo Principles and Functional Medicine.

ABOUT DR. TERRY WAHLS:  Terry Wahls M.D., is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City.  She has made it her mission to spread the word about The Wahls Protocol through her New Book, her Lectures, her Website, and Food as Medicine Classes.  She lives in Iowa City with her wife and daughter.  Her son, Zach Wahls, is the Author of The New York Times Bestseller My Two Moms.

ABOUT THE WAHLS PROTOCOL:  An integrative approach to healing chronic autoimmune conditions by a Doctor, Researcher, and sufferer of Progressive Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

Like many physicians, Terry Wahls, M.D., focused on treating her patients’ ailments with drugs or surgical procedures, until she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in 2000.  Within three Years, her back and stomach muscles had weakened to the point where she needed a tilt-recline wheelchair.  Conventional medical treatments were failing her, and she feared that she would be bedridden for the rest of her life.  Dr. Wahls began studying the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements.  Dr. Wahl’s adopted the nutrient-rich paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of neuromuscular stimulation.  First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked eighteen miles in a single Day.  In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable recovery in a TEDx talk that immediately went viral.  Now, in The Wahls Protocol, she shares the details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share The Wahls Protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and other autoimmune conditions.

Kelly Wachel Book Release Party for Parents and Schools Together

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Kelly Wachel, a Kansas City native, will appear to celebrate the Publication of her New Book Parents and Schools Together: Blueprint for Success with Urban Youth.

ABOUT KELLY WACHEL:  Kelly Wachel is the Public Information Officer for Center School District in south Kansas City.  She spends part of her time helping schools produce high achieving students and the other part raising her three kids, Maggie, Abe, and Lydia, with her husband Matt, usually the two are not mutually exclusive.

ABOUT PARENTS AND SCHOOLS TOGETHER:  Parents And Schools Together shows administrators, teachers, and parents how to work together to produce high achieving students in urban school districts.  We all know that in this fast-paced world of standards and commitments, it is easy to forget what schools and parents are all about.  There are things that schools can do to show parents the way to raise successful students.  Parents have to help in order for schools to be high performing.  Schools, especially schools of poverty and low achievement, have to have parent help if they are going to make it.  Parents can’t use the excuse that they don' t know what to do or I’m not going to do that anymore.  When schools enlist the help of parents, schools can begin to harness the full effect of all adults tag teaming together to raise students up to the levels they are capable of.  Parents and School Together shows that it’s not just the school’s job to raise kids and it is not just the parent's job to raise kids.  It takes both working together to raise successful students and kids.

A riveting examination of a Nation in crisis, from one of the finest political journalists of our generation American Democracy is beset by a sense of crisis.

Seismic shifts during a single generation have created a country of winners and losers, allowing unprecedented freedom while rending the social contract, driving the political system to the verge of breakdown, and setting citizens adrift to find new paths forward.  In The Unwinding, George Packer tells the story of the United States over the past three decades in an utterly original way, with his characteristically sharp eye for detail and gift for weaving together complex narratives.  The Unwinding journeys through the lives of several Americans, including Dean Price, the son of tobacco farmers, who becomes an evangelist for a new economy in the rural South; Tammy Thomas, a factory worker in the Rust Belt trying to survive the collapse of her city; Jeff Connaughton, a Washington insider oscillating between political idealism and the lure of organized money; and Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley billionaire who questions the Internet’s significance and arrives at a radical vision of the future.  Packer interweaves these intimate stories with biographical sketches of the era’s leading public figures, from Newt Gingrich to Jay-Z, and collages made from newspaper headlines, advertising slogans, and song lyrics that capture the flow of events and their undercurrents. The Unwinding portrays a superpower in danger of coming apart at the seams, its elites no longer elite, its institutions no longer working, its ordinary people left to improvise their own schemes for success and salvation.  Packer’s novelistic and kaleidoscopic history of the new America is his most ambitious work to date.
