NEW VENUE: Joshua Zeitz will appear In Conversation for Lincoln's Boys: John Hay, John Nicolay, and the War for Lincoln's Image

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Joshua Zeitz will appear In Conversation with David Von Drehle, Editor-at-Large for TIME Magazine and Bestselling Author of Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America's Most Perilous Year about Joshua's New Book Lincoln's Boys: John Hay, John Nicolay, and the War for Lincoln's Image.

ABOUT JOSHUA ZEITZ:  Joshua Zeitz has taught American history and politics at Cambridge University, Harvard University, and Princeton University. He is the author of several books on American political and social history and has written for the New York Times, Washington Post, The New Republic, The Atlantic, Dissent, American Heritage. He lives with his wife and daughter in Hoboken, NJ.

ABOUT Lincoln's Boys: John Hay, John Nicolay, and the War for Lincoln's Image:  A timely and intimate look into Abraham Lincoln’s White House through the lives of his two closest aides and confidants Lincoln’s official secretaries John Hay and John Nicolay enjoyed more access, witnessed more history, and knew Lincoln better than anyone outside of the president’s immediate family. Hay and Nicolay were the gatekeepers of the Lincoln legacy. They read poetry and attendeded the theater with the president, commiserated with him over Union army setbacks, and plotted electoral strategy. They were present at every seminal event, from the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation to Lincoln’s delivery of the Gettysburg Address—and they wrote about it after his death. In their biography of Lincoln, Hay and Nicolay fought to establish Lincoln’s heroic legacy and to preserve a narrative that saw slavery—not states’ rights—as the sole cause of the Civil War. As Joshua Zeitz shows, the image of a humble man with uncommon intellect who rose from obscurity to become a storied wartime leader and emancipator is very much their creation. Drawing on letters, diaries, and memoirs, Lincoln’s Boys is part political drama and part coming-of-age tale—a fascinating story of friendship, politics, war, and the contest over history and remembrance.

ABOUT THE FUTURE OF THE MIND:  The New York Times Bestselling Author of Physics of the Impossible, Physics of the Future and Hyperspace tackles the most fascinating and complex object in the known universe: the human brain.   For the first time in history, the secrets of the living brain are being revealed by a battery of high tech brain scans devised by physicists.  Now what was once solely the province of science fiction has become a startling reality. Recording memories, telepathy, videotaping our dreams, mind control, avatars, and telekinesis are not only possible; they already exist.  The Future of the Mind gives us an authoritative and compelling look at the astonishing research being done in top laboratories around the world—all based on the latest advancements in neuroscience and physics.  One day we might have a "smart pill" that can enhance our cognition; be able to upload our brain to a computer, neuron for neuron; send thoughts and emotions around the world on a "brain-net"; control computers and robots with our mind; push the very limits of immortality; and perhaps even send our consciousness across the universe.  Dr. Kaku takes us on a grand tour of what the future might hold, giving us not only a solid sense of how the brain functions but also how these technologies will change our daily lives. He even presents a radically new way to think about "consciousness" and applies it to provide fresh insight into mental illness, artificial intelligence and alien consciousness.   With Dr. Kaku's deep understanding of modern science and keen eye for future developments, The Future of the Mind is a scientific tour de force, an extraordinary, mind-boggling exploration of the frontiers of neuroscience.

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Living legend Graham Nash will appear In Conversation with Vivien Jennings & Roger Doeren about his New Memoir Wild Tales: A Rock & Roll Life.

Special Event Co-Sponsors are Rainy Day Books, Country Club Bank & Big Dudes Music City.

Beginning at 6:00 PM, a 45 Minute Multimedia Video Presentation about Graham Nash's life in Rock & Roll created by Roger Doeren and Burke Doeren Productions, will precede the Conversation.

ABOUT GRAHAM NASH:  Graham Nash is a two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductee — once with Crosby, Stills & Nash and once with The Hollies.  He was also inducted into the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame twice — both as a Solo Artist and with CSN.  And, he is a Grammy® Award Winner.  In 2010, Nash was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) respectfully referred to as a "Sir" by Queen Elizabeth II for his contributions as a Musician and Philanthropist.  Graham prefers to be referred to as "Graham." An activist for social and environmental justice, he is also an artist, acclaimed Photographer and Photography Collector.  His company Nash Editions’ original IRIS 3047 digital printer is on display in the National Museum of American History at the Smithsonian Institution in recognition revolutionary accomplishments in the fine arts Digital Printing world.  He lives in Hawaii with his wife, Susan.

ABOUT WILD TALES: A ROCK & ROLL LIFE:  From Graham Nash — the legendary musician and founding member of the iconic bands Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Hollies (Named in Honor of Buddy Holly) — comes a candid and riveting Autobiography that belongs on the reading list of every classic rock fan.  Graham Nash's songs defined a generation and helped shape the history of Rock & Roll — he’s written over 200 Songs, including such classic hits as "Carrie Anne," “On A Carousel,” "Simple Man," "Our House," “Marrakesh Express,” and "Teach Your Children."  From the opening salvos of the British Rock Revolution to the last shudders of Woodstock, he has Rocked & Rolled wherever music mattered.  Now Graham is ready to tell his Life Story: his lower-class childhood in post-war England, his early days in the British Invasion group The Hollies; becoming the lover and muse of Joni Mitchell during the halcyon years, when both produced their most introspective and important work; meeting David Crosby & Stephen Stills and reaching superstardom with Crosby, Stills, & Nash, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young; and his enduring career as a solo musician and political activist.  Graham has valuable insights into a world and time many think they know from the outside but few have experienced at its epicenter, and equally wonderful anecdotes about the people around him: The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Cass Elliot, Bob Dylan, and other rock luminaries.  From London to Laurel Canyon and beyond, Wild Tales is a revealing look back at an extraordinary Life—with all the highs and the lows; the love, the sex, and the jealousy; the politics; the drugs; the insanity—and the sanity—of a magical era of music.

Barry Miles In Conversation for his new book Call Me Burroughs: A Life

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Barry Miles, a Bestselling Biographer, will appear In Conversation to discuss his New Book Call Me Burroughs.

ABOUT BARRY MILES:  Barry Miles straddled many worlds as a participant in and chronicler of the London Underground in the 1960’s. He was a founder of the independent newspaper International Times, co-owner of the Indica Gallery where John Lennon famously met Yoko Ono, and a close friend to some of the most influential artists of the decade.

As a confidant of The Beatles and director of Zapple, the spoken-word division of The Beatles’ Apple record label, he was present at numerous recording sessions, including the famous "Sgt. Pepper's" photo shoot. It was there, in 1965, that Miles met William Burroughs, when the American was living in London ("We got to be quite good friends," he says). This is how Burroughs ended up on the cover of the classic album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band."

Barry Miles is the author of many seminal books on popular culture, including the authorized biography of Paul McCartney, Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now; Ginsberg: A Biography; William Burroughs: El Hombre Invisible; Jack Kerouac: King of the Beats; and The Beat Hotel: Ginsberg, Burroughs, and Corso in Paris, 1957-1963. He also co-edited the Revised Text Edition of Naked Lunch. Miles was born in Cirencester, England and will be touring the United States for the upcoming centennial celebrating the life of William S. Burroughs. He lives in England.

ABOUT CALL ME BURROUGHS:  Fifty years ago, Norman Mailer asserted, "William Burroughs is the only American novelist living today who may conceivably be possessed by genius."  Few since have taken such literary risks, developed such individual political or spiritual ideas, or spanned such a wide range of media.  Burroughs wrote novels, memoirs, technical manuals, and poetry.  He painted, made collages, took thousands of photographs, produced hundreds of hours of experimental recordings, acted in movies, and recorded more CDs than most rock bands.  Burroughs was the original cult figure of the Beat Movement, and with the publication of his novel Naked Lunch, which was originally banned for obscenity, he became a guru to the 60s youth counterculture.  In Call Me Burroughs, Barry Miles, Biographer and Beat Historian, presents the first full-length Biography of Burroughs to be published in a quarter century-and the first one to chronicle the last decade of Burroughs's life and examine his long-term cultural legacy.  Written with the full support of the Burroughs estate and drawing from countless interviews with figures like Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, and Burroughs himself, Call Me Burroughs is a rigorously researched biography that finally gets to the heart of its notoriously mercurial subject.

Newt & Callista Gingrich at The KMBZ 98.1 FM Speakers Series Luncheon

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Former Speaker of the House and Host of CNN's Crossfire Newt Gingrich will appear to discuss his New Book Breakout: Pioneers of the Future, Prison Guards of the Past, and the Epic Battle that will Decide America's Fate.  Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista Gingrich will autograph their Books following the program.  This KMBZ 98.1 FM Speakers Series Luncheon is Co-Sponsored by KMBZ 98.1 FM, Barber Financial Group and Rainy Day Books.

About Newt Gingrich:  Speaker Newt Gingrich is well known as the architect of the “Contract with America” that led the Republican Party to victory in 1994.  He is a host of Crossfire on CNN and was a Republican candidate for president of the United States from 2011 to 2012.  Newt and his wife Callista host and produce historical and public policy documentaries.  Recent films include A City upon a Hill: The Spirit of American Exceptionalism, Nine Days That Changed the World, and Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous with Destiny.  He resides with Callista in McLean, Virginia, and has two daughters and two grandchildren.

About Breakout: Pioneers of the Future, Prison Guards of the Past, and the Epic Battle That Will Decide America's Fate:  Bestselling Author Newt Gingrich proposes a bold vision of the future: America is on the cusp of a renaissance, a new birth of technological and scientific innovation that will dramatically transform the prosperity and quality of life of every American.  Our biggest enemy? Special interest groups, powerful lobbyists, and government bureaucrats who are determined to squash, control, or prevent these innovations and permanently change the future of America.  These are the Enemies of the Future--powerful forces determined to prevent the enormous benefits that American ingenuity will bring.  In his groundbreaking new book Breakout, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich sketches America's future, brimming with possibilities and prosperity.  Despite big government regulation and taxation, despite special interest groups and lobbyists, American entrepreneurs, innovators, engineers, and scientists are still abundantly creative and productive. Gingrich describes the top technologies that promise to change the way we live and prosper, including 3D printing, driverless cars, breakthroughs in genetics and medicine, unprecedented and ever-growing internet connectivity, and the new "app store" model of business development.  Will big government, whacky extremists, and powerful lobbyists stop these innovations?  They will try with punitive taxes, stifling regulation, and hopelessly outdated policies.  Will Americans "allow" it?  Newt Gingrich sounds the rallying cry to make sure we "defeat" the enemies of the future.

About Callista Gingrich:  Callista Gingrich is the President of Gingrich Productions.  She and her husband, Newt Gingrich, host and produce historical and public policy documentaries.  Recent films include A City Upon a Hill, America at Risk, and Nine Days That Changed the World. Mrs. Gingrich’s photography is featured in The New York Times Bestseller, Rediscovering God in America, and she is the Co-Author of Ronald Reagan: Rendezvous with Destiny.  Mrs. Gingrich is the voice of several Audio Books, including A Nation Like No Other and To Save America.  Mrs. Gingrich is also the President of the Gingrich Foundation.  She resides in McLean, Virginia.  Mrs. Gingrich is the Author of The New York Times Bestsellers Sweet Land of Liberty and Land of the Pilgrims’ Pride, featuring Ellis the Elephant.

About Yankee Doodle Dandy:  Ellis the Elephant dives back into history in Yankee Doodle Dandy, the third installment of this New York Times Bestselling Series, America's favorite time traveling pachyderm is back, teaching kids (and parents ) about the American Revolution.  In Sweet Land of Liberty and Land of the Pilgrims' Pride, Ellis the Elephant explored pivotal moments that shaped American history.  Now Ellis is back, and eager to learn about America's most beloved patriots and their courageous fight for independence.  Traveling through time, Ellis the Elephant encounters the Sons of Liberty, Patrick Henry, Paul Revere, the Founding Fathers, Betsy Ross, and more.  Authored by Callista Gingrich and Illustrated by Susan Arciero, Yankee Doodle Dandy educates and entertains as Ellis the Elephant experiences the American Revolution.  With beautiful illustrations and charming rhymes, Yankee Doodle Dandy is a must read for young and old alike who want to know how America became a free and independent nation.

Doris Kearns Goodwin will discuss The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Pulitzer Prize-winning Biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin will discuss her New Book The Bully Pulpit: Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft, and the Golden Age of Journalism.

ABOUT DORIS KEARNS GOODWIN:  Doris Kearns Goodwin is the Author of the runaway Bestseller Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln.  She won the Pulitzer Prize in History for No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt: The Home Front in World War II and is also the Author of the Bestsellers: Wait Till Next Year, The Fitzgeralds and the Kennedys and Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream.  She lives in Concord, Massachusetts, with her husband, Richard N. Goodwin.

ABOUT THE BULLY PULPIT:  After Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln, Doris Kearns Goodwin wields her magic on another larger-than-life president, and another momentous and raucous American time period as she brings Theodore Roosevelt, the muckraking journalists, and the Progressive Era to life.  As she focused on the relationship between Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and Lincoln and his Team, Goodwin describes the broken friendship between Teddy Roosevelt and his chosen successor, William Howard Taft.  With the help of the “muckraking” press—including legendary journalists Ida Tarbell, Lincoln Steffens, William Allen White, and editor Sam McClure—Roosevelt had wielded the Bully Pulpit to challenge and triumph over abusive monopolies, political bosses, and corrupting money brokers. Roosevelt led a revolution that he bequeathed to Taft only to see it compromised as Taft surrendered to money men and big business.  The rupture between the two led Roosevelt to run against Taft for president, an ultimately futile race that resulted in the election of Democrat Woodrow Wilson and the diminishment of Theodore Roosevelt’s progressive wing of the Republican Party.  Like Goodwin’s chronicles of the Civil War and the Great Depression, The Bully Pulpit describes a time in our history that enlightened and changed the country, ushered in the modern age, and produced some unforgettable men and women.

Eben Alexander, M.D., will discuss Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Bestselling Author and Neurosurgeon Eben Alexander, M.D., will appear to discuss his Bestselling Book Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife.

ABOUT EBEN ALEXANDER:  Eben Alexander, M.D., is the #1 Bestselling Author of Proof of Heaven.  He has been an Academic Neurosurgeon for the past 25 Years, including 15 Years at the Brigham & Women’s and the Children’s Hospitals and Harvard Medical School in Boston.

ABOUT PROOF OF HEAVEN:  Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible.  Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists.  A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.  Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness.  The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely.  For seven days he lay in a coma.  Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.  Alexander’s recovery is a medical miracle. But the real miracle of his story lies elsewhere.  While his body lay in coma, Alexander journeyed beyond this world and encountered an angelic being who guided him into the deepest realms of super-physical existence. There he met, and spoke with, the Divine source of the universe itself.   Alexander’s story is not a fantasy.  Before he underwent his journey, he could not reconcile his knowledge of neuroscience with any belief in heaven, God, or the soul.  Today Alexander is a doctor who believes that true health can be achieved only when we realize that God and the soul are real and that death is not the end of personal existence but only a transition.  This story would be remarkable no matter who it happened to.  That it happened to Dr. Alexander makes it revolutionary.  No scientist or person of faith will be able to ignore it.  Reading it will change your life.

ABOUT THE FOUR DOORS:  Bestselling novelist Richard Paul Evans has met hundreds of thousands of people and heard many of their stories in his travels over the past two decades.  Most of the people he meets are hungry for inspiration; they love his novels because his characters are also searching for meaning and understanding.  The Four Doors is Richard Paul Evans' message to those who seek inspiration in their lives.  It began as a talk he gave on the spur of the moment, and over the course of ten years, it has evolved into a message he has shared with successful business people, students, and even addicts and prisoners.  It includes stories his readers have told him, stories about great achievers who overcame hardships, and stories about his own struggle growing up in a large family with financial difficulties and a suicidal mother, and about his diagnosis of Tourette s Syndrome later in life.  These inspiring stories are woven through his identification and careful explanation of the four doors to a more fulfilling life:

  • Believe there is a reason you were born
  • Free yourself from limitation
  • Magnify your life
  • Develop a love-centered map

Evans believes that we all want to know the meaning of our lives. In The Four Doors, he shows how even the most quiet life can be full of purpose and joy, if we choose to take that first step over the threshold.
