Jenny Lawson, AKA, The Bloggess will present her memoir Let's Pretend This Never Happened

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Jenny Lawson, AKA, The Bloggess will present her Bestselling Book Let's Pretend This Never Happened: (A Mostly True Memoir).

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Jenny Lawson is a Columnist and one of the most popular Bloggers on Twitter (hundreds of thousands of followers).  Her blog, www.TheBloggess.com  averages between 2 to 3 Million Page Views per Month.  Jenny lives in the Texas Hill Country with her husband and daughter.

ABOUT THE NEW BOOK:  Jenny Lawson realized that the most mortifying moments of our lives, the ones we’d like to pretend never happened, are in fact the ones that define us.  In the #1 New York Times Bestseller, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, Lawson takes readers on a hilarious journey recalling her bizarre upbringing in rural Texas, her devastatingly awkward high school years, and her relationship with her long-suffering husband, Victor. Chapters include: “Stanley the Magical, Talking Squirrel”; “A Series of Angry Post-It Notes to My Husband”; “My Vagina Is Fine.  Thanks for Asking”; “And Then I Snuck a Dead Cuban Alligator on an Airplane.”  Pictures with captions (no one would believe these things without proof) accompany the text.

“GET READY.  Jenny has such a disturbing, ill-mannered, rich sense of humor you will wonder, ‘Am I the sick one for laughing?’  Everyone I gave the Book to confirmed: We must all be sick, because this Book IS HYSTERICAL and yet it was also strangely touching at times.  It’s one of my favorite Books in the past five years.” ~ Kathryn Stockett, # 1 New York Times Bestselling Author of The Help

Ernest Freeberg will present his New Book, The Age of Edison: Electric Light and the Invention of Modern America

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Ernest Freeberg will present his New Book The Age of Edison: Electric Light and the Invention of Modern America.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Ernest Freeberg is a distinguished professor of humanities in the history department at the University of Tennessee.  He is the author of The Education of Laura Bridgman and Democracy’s Prisoner, which was a Los Angeles Times Book Prize finalist and winner of the David J. Langum, Sr. Prize in American Legal History and the Eli M. Oboler Award from the American Library Association’s Intellectual Freedom Roundtable.  Freeberg is a distinguished lecturer for the Organization of American Historians and has produced a number of public radio documentaries on historical themes.

ABOUT THE NEW BOOK:  The late nineteenth century was a period of explosive technological creativity, but arguably the most important invention of all was Thomas Edison’s incandescent lightbulb.  Unveiled in his Menlo Park, New Jersey, laboratory in 1879, the lightbulb overwhelmed the American public with the sense of the birth of a new age. More than any other invention, the electric light marked the arrival of modernity.  The lightbulb became a catalyst for the nation’s transformation from a rural to an urban-dominated culture.  City streetlights defined zones between rich and poor, and the electrical grid sharpened the line between town and country. “Bright lights” meant “big city.”  Like moths to a flame, millions of Americans migrated to urban centers in these decades, leaving behind the shadow of candle and kerosene lamp in favor of the exciting brilliance of the urban streetscape.

The Age of Edison places the story of Edison’s invention in the context of a technological revolution that transformed America and Europe in these decades.  Edison and his fellow inventors emerged from a culture shaped by broad public education, a lively popular press that took an interest in science and technology, and an American patent system that encouraged innovation and democratized the benefits of invention.  And in the end, as Freeberg shows, Edison’s greatest invention was not any single technology, but rather his reinvention of the process itself.  At Menlo Park he gathered the combination of capital, scientific training, and engineering skill that would evolve into the modern research and development laboratory.  His revolutionary electrical grid not only broke the stronghold of gas companies, but also ushered in an era when strong, clear light could become accessible to everyone.

Susan Cain will present her Book, Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Susan Cain will present her Bestselling Book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can't Stop Talking.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Susan Cain is the author of the instant New York Times Bestseller Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, which is being translated into thirty languages.  Her writing has appeared in The New York Times; The Atlantic; The Dallas Morning News; O, The Oprah Magazine; Time.com; and on PsychologyToday.com  Cain has also spoken at Microsoft, Google, the U.S. Treasury, and at TED 2012.  Since her TED talk was posted online, it has been viewed over three million times.  She has appeared on national broadcast television and radio including CBS “This Morning,” NPR’s “All Things Considered,” and NPR’s “Diane Rehm,” and her work has been featured on the cover of Time magazine, in The New Yorker, Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, Wired, Fast Company, Real Simple, Fortune, Forbes, USA Today, The Washington Post, CNN, Slate.com, and many other publications.  She is an honors graduate of Princeton and Harvard Law School.  She lives in the Hudson River Valley with her husband and two sons. Visit: www.ThePowerOfIntroverts.com

ABOUT THE NEW BOOK:  At least one-third of the people we know are introverts.  They are the ones who prefer listening to speaking, reading to partying; who innovate and create but dislike self-promotion; who favor working on their own over brainstorming in teams.  Although they are often labeled "quiet," it is to introverts that we owe many of the great contributions to society, from van Gogh’s sunflowers to the invention of the personal computer. Passionately argued, impressively researched, and filled with indelible stories of real people, Quiet shows how dramatically we undervalue introverts, and how much we lose in doing so.  Taking the reader on a journey from Dale Carnegie’s birthplace to Harvard Business School, from a Tony Robbins seminar to an evangelical megachurch, Susan Cain charts the rise of the Extrovert Ideal in the twentieth century and explores its far-reaching effects.  She talks to Asian-American students who feel alienated from the brash, backslapping atmosphere of American schools. She questions the dominant values of American business culture, where forced collaboration can stand in the way of innovation, and where the leadership potential of introverts is often overlooked.  And she draws on cutting-edge research in psychology and neuroscience to reveal the surprising differences between extroverts and introverts.  Perhaps most inspiring, she introduces us to successful introverts, from a witty, high-octane public speaker who recharges in solitude after his talks, to a record-breaking salesman who quietly taps into the power of questions. Finally, she offers invaluable advice on everything from how to better negotiate differences in introvert-extrovert relationships to how to empower an introverted child to when it makes sense to be a "pretend extrovert."  This extraordinary book has the power to permanently change how we see introverts and, equally important, how introverts see themselves.

In Conscious Capitalism, John Mackey, Co-Author, iconic Co-Founder & Co-CEO of Whole Foods Market and Professor Raj Sisodia, Co-Author, Co-Founder & Chairman of the Conscious Capitalism Institute show how such companies are creating a movement that’s transforming business.  The authors present the fundamental principles and practices of their bold new vision of conscious capitalism: businesses operating from a sense of higher purpose and prospering financially while also generating other critical forms of value emotional, social, intellectual, ecological, financial, and spiritual.  These are businesses built on love and care instead of fear and stress. Some of today’s best companies Google, UPS, Southwest Airlines, Herman Miller, Bright Horizons, Patagonia, Panera, Starbucks, REI, Tata and others are making this vision real. They’re not being politically correct.  Rather, they understand that Conscious Capitalism is the ultimate path to long-term competitive advantage.  They’re full-throated advocates for free markets, entrepreneurship, competition, and property rights.  But they operate by a markedly different set of principles.

Drawing on decades of personal experience and interviews with Conscious Capitalist CEOs and thought leaders, this Book reveals those principles explaining how to:

• Align all your stakeholders, customers, employees, investors, suppliers, society, the environment and gain synergies instead of accepting trade-offs

• Serve your organization’s higher purpose instead of personal ambitions

• Build a conscious culture that creates tremendous value and competes successfully but looks beyond profits

• Manage every function in your business consciously HR, marketing, strategy, operations

Authored by the high-profile leaders of the movement and supported by extensive research, this revolutionary Book gives leaders in every industry and sector a blueprint for much-needed change.  It is about creating a new philosophical paradigm for business and capitalism.  It will lead you to think about and practice business differently with purpose, multiple stakeholder alignment, conscious leadership, and with fully human, caring business cultures.

Mike Huckabee will Author Autograph Dear Chandler, Dear Scarlett: A Grandfather's Thoughts on Faith, Family, and the Things That Matter Most

EVENT:  Mike Huckabee, Former Arkansas Governor and host of HUCKABEE on the Fox News Channel and Cumulus Media Networks’ syndicated radio program, The Mike Huckabee Show, appears for his New Book Dear Chandler, Dear Scarlett: A Grandfather's Thoughts on Faith, Family, and the Things That Matter Most on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 3:30 PM at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112.  This Event is Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books and KCMO Talk Radio 710 AM.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  “I wrote these letters so that long after I’m gone, you’ll know that I loved you, had great hopes for you, and wanted to give you my best advice on living in this tough world.  If I can’t be there with you, I hope my letters will act as a sort of reminder of me, as if I’m standing there beside you, whispering in your ear, and putting my arm around your shoulder.”  Mike Huckabee has worn many hats throughout his life: pastor, politician, Governor, Presidential Candidate, Talk Show Host, rock bassist, pundit, husband, and father.  But since his first grandchild was born, he’s found that the role of grandfather is more satisfying than just about any of the others.  Mike wanted to give something to his grandson, Chandler, that would last forever.  He began drafting a series of letters to Chandler recounting heartwarming stories from his past and the bittersweet lessons learned along the way.  With the birth of his granddaughter, Scarlett, just a year later, Huckabee was further inspired to convey his love and wisdom.  Dear Chandler, Dear Scarlett touches on the timeless topics of faith, love, family, overcoming adversity, and staying true to your values in the face of failure and temptation.  For instance, Huckabee tells how being forced to pick up pecans from the trees in his yard taught him the value of hard work.  (“We were told that if we wanted to eat that night and sleep in a bed instead of in the yard, we’d pick up the pecans.”)  Years later he learned the real meaning of love after watching a friend care for his dying wife who could no longer recognize him.  (“He loved her not because he enjoyed it or found pleasure in it, but because he had promised that he would never leave her until death parted them.  And here he was, keeping that promise, faithful to the end.”)  Like his Bestseller A Simple Christmas; Dear Chandler, Dear Scarlett isn’t about politics.  It’s a deeply personal, heartfelt, inspirational book that can be enjoyed by anyone.  As Mike writes: “Although my advice comes from my personal experience and I’m writing with my grandkids in mind, I hope any parent, grandparent, child, or grandchild can take away something valuable from these letters.  I’ll try not to be too obnoxious, but don’t worry, if you ever sit next to me on a plane, I’ll still be happy to show you all the photos of Chandler and Scarlett I have on my phone.”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee is the host of the number one rated weekend hit HUCKABEE on the Fox News Channel and Cumulus Media Networks’ syndicated radio program, The Mike Huckabee Show, heard on more than 175 stations.  He’s also heard three times daily across the nation on The Huckabee Report syndicated on almost 600 stations, and has been the fastest growing new program on the Cumulus Media Network in recent years.  He is the Author of 9 Books, the most recent being A Simple Government.  This is his fourth Book that has been on The New York Times Bestseller List joining Do the Right Thing, A Simple Christmas and Can't Wait Till Christmas.

EVENT:  Alex Danchev gives us the first comprehensive assessment of the revolutionary work and restless life of Paul Cézanne to be published in decades.  One of the most influential painters of his time and beyond, Cézanne was the exemplary artist-creator of the modern age who changed the way we see the world.  With brisk intellect, rich documentation, and eighty-eight color and fifty-two black-and-white illustrations, Danchev tells the story of an artist who was originally considered a madman, a barbarian, and a sociopath.  Beginning with the unsettled teenager in Aix, Danchev takes us through the trials of a painter who believed that art must be an expression of temperament but was tormented by self-doubt, who was rejected by the Salon for forty years, who sold nothing outside his immediate circle until his thirties, who had a family that he kept secret from his father until his forties, who had his first exhibition at the age of fifty-six, but who fiercely maintained his revolutionary beliefs.  Danchev shows us how the beliefs Cézanne held and the life he led became the obsession and inspiration of artists, writers, poets, and philosophers from Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso to Samuel Beckett and Allen Ginsberg.  A special feature of the book is a remarkable series of Cézanne’s self-portraits, reproduced in full color.  Cézanne is not only the fascinating life of a visionary artist and extraordinary human being but also a searching assessment of his ongoing influence in the artistic imagination of our time.  A stunning portrait of a monumentally important artist, this is a biography not to be missed.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Alex Danchev was educated at University College, Oxford; Trinity Hall, Cambridge; and King’s College London.  He is the Author of several highly acclaimed biographies, including Georges Braque.  His most recent books are a collection of essays, On Art and War and Terror and 100 Artists’ Manifestos.  He writes regularly for The Times Literary Supplement and Times Higher Education.  He has held fellowships at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.; St. Antony’s College, Oxford and King’s College London.  He is a Professor of International Relations at the University of Nottingham.  He lives in Nottingham, England.

A Conversation with Damien Echols: Life After Death

EVENT:  A Conversation with Damien Echols, appearing for his new memoir Life After Death. This Event is Friday, October 12, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112. This Event is Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books & Midwest Innocence Project.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  In 1993, teenagers Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin, and Jessie Misskelley, Jr., who have come to be known as the West Memphis Three were arrested for the murders of three eight-year-old boys in Arkansas.  The ensuing trial was marked by tampered evidence, false testimony, and public hysteria.  Baldwin and Misskelley were sentenced to life in prison; while eighteen-year-old Echols, deemed the “ringleader,” was sentenced to death.  Over the next two decades, the WM3 became known worldwide as a symbol of wrongful conviction and imprisonment, with thousands of supporters and many notable celebrities who called for a new trial.  In a shocking turn of events, all three men were released in August 2011.  Now Echols shares his story in full—from abuse by prison guards and wardens, to portraits of fellow inmates and deplorable living conditions, to the incredible reserves of patience, spirituality, and perseverance that kept him alive and sane while incarcerated for nearly two decades.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Damien Echols was born in 1974 and grew up in Mississippi, Tennessee, Maryland, Oregon, and Arkansas.  At age eighteen, he was arrested along with Jason Baldwin and Jessie Miskelley and charged with the deaths of three boys, now known as the Robin Hood Hill murders, in West Memphis, Arkansas.  Echols received a death sentence and spent almost eighteen years on Death Row, until he, Baldwin, and Misskelley were released in 2011.  The West Memphis Three have been the subject of Paradise Lost, a three-part documentary series produced by HBO, and West of Memphis, a documentary produced by Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh.  Echols is the author of a self-published memoir titled Almost Home. He and his wife, Lorri Davis, live in New York City.

David Von Drehle: Order your autographed copy of Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America's Most Perilous Year

Kansas City author David Von Drehle regularly stops by and autographs copies of his New Book Rise to Greatness: Abraham Lincoln and America's Most Perilous Year. If you would like to order an autographed book, use the link below. If you would like David to personalize a book, add that information to the "Order Comments" field during the checkout process.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  As 1862 dawned, the American republic was at death's door. The federal government appeared overwhelmed, the U.S. Treasury was broke, and the Union’s top general was gravely ill.  The Confederacy with its booming economy, expert military leadership, and commanding position on the battlefield had a clear view to victory.  To a remarkable extent, the survival of the country depended on the judgment, cunning, and resilience of the unschooled frontier lawyer who had recently been elected president.  Twelve months later, the Civil War had become a cataclysm but the tide had turned.  The Union generals who would win the war had at last emerged, and the Confederate Army had suffered the key losses that would lead to its doom. The blueprint of modern America, an expanding colossus of industrial and financial might had been indelibly inked.  And the man who brought the nation through its darkest hour, Abraham Lincoln, had been forged into a singular leader.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  David Von Drehle is the author of three previous books, including the Award-Winning Triangle: The Fire that Changed America, a history of the devasting Triangle Shirtwaist Factory fire that The New York Times called "social history at its best."  Now, an Editor-at-Large at Time Magazine, David and his family live in Kansas City, Missouri.
