Kate White, Former Cosmo Editor-In-Chief, for A Gutsy Girls' Night Out about I Shouldn't Be Telling You This

EVENT:  The New York Times Bestselling Author Kate White will appear for the Publication of her New Book I Shouldn't Be Telling You This: How to Ask for the Money, Snag the Promotion, and Create the Career You Deserve  on Monday, September 23, 2013 at 7:00 PM at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112.  This Event is Co-Sponsored by Rainy Day Books and KC Magazine in partnership with Go Red For Women.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  Kate White is a force of nature — a feisty, irreverently witty, savvy mentor on a mission to help women get more out of their lives — in the workplace and at home.  For gutsy girls just starting out to those rising to the next level and giving their success legs, Kate shares the secrets of success, and how you can love every minute of it.  In her career running five major magazines, including her former job as editor-in-chief of Cosmopolitan, she has lived it all.

I SHOULDN’T BE TELLING YOU THIS offers the techniques for success: how to get it, go big with it, and — yes, Kate means this — savor it.  (There’s no fun upside in working yourself so hard you don’t enjoy your life.) Combining fresh and candid advice, reality checks, and proven principles with juicy behind-the-scenes anecdotes, Kate provides the steps to creating success, including valuable insights on how to:

• Land a job you’re truly passionate about

• Go big or go home by making the bold moves

• Always ask for what you want and get it — the money, responsibility, title changes, benefits, bonuses, and perks

• Tackle a project that no one else will and nail it — and make sure your boss knows it

• Use “bitch envy” to your advantage

• Radiate confidence and get buzzed about (without worrying what other people think)

• Develop a “golden gut” to break the rules the right way, so you always come out shining

• Manage your career and not just your job (it’s a whole different league!)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Kate White is recognized internationally as not only the recently retired Editor-In-Chief of Cosmopolitan, the Bestselling young women’s Magazine in the world, but also the critically acclaimed author of both fiction and nonfiction books.  Few high-profile editors have successfully balanced the rigors of overseeing a major magazine with a thriving and independent writing career. It all began when Kate won Glamour magazine’s Top Ten College Women contest and appeared on the cover.  She earned a position at the magazine and quickly rose from editorial assistant to feature writer and columnist.  After holding key jobs at several national magazines, she became an editor-in-chief, running four magazines (including Redbook) before taking the helm at Cosmopolitan in 1998.  In the 13 years she was at Cosmo, guaranteed circulation has grown by 700,000.  Drawing on experiences from her successful career, Kate published the Bestselling career bible, Why Good Girls Don’t Get Ahead… but Gutsy Girls Do.  Kate also has a passion for writing fiction. Penning her first novel, If Looks Could Kill, in 2002—which was selected as Live with Regis and Kelly’s first Reading with Ripa Bookclub Pick—Kate introduced her feisty and irreverent sleuth, Bailey Weggins. Bailey went on to solve more grisly murders and entertain readers in A Body to Die For (2003), Til Death Do Us Part (2004), Over Her Dead Body (2005), and then again in Lethally Blond (2007), all New York Times Bestsellers.  The most recent Bailey Weggins mystery, So Pretty It Hurts, was published March 2012.  Kate’s first stand-alone thriller, Hush, was published by HarperCollins in March 2010 and became a New York Times Bestseller.  Her next thriller, The Sixes, published in 2012, is the story of Phoebe Hall, who takes a job teaching at a college and discovers a secret society on campus that may be responsible for several grisly murders.  Kate’s writer’s eye has been described by The New York Times as “scathingly observant,” capturing “the mood…with a verisimilitude some of her peers might recognize.”  The Los Angeles Times says of Kate’s work: “It’s like devouring a box of chocolates!” Through her magazine work and her books, Kate White has influenced at least two generations of women with her unique honesty, passion, and imagination.  She is the winner of the Matrix Award for Outstanding Achievement in Communication as well as the Woodhall Institute Award for Ethical Leadership. Kate is married with two children.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  By America’s premier sportswriter, written with full cooperation of Joe Paterno and his family, Paterno is the definitive account of the epic life of America’s winningest college football coach.  Published to coincide with Penn State football’s first season without their legendary leader.  Born in Brooklyn in 1926, Joe Paterno was a first generation college student who became a star quarterback while attending Brown University.  After graduation in 1950, at age twenty-three, he was hired by his former coach as assistant coach at Penn State.  Over the course of sixty-two football seasons, Joe Paterno’s influence was felt as the Nittany Lions won 409 games, a Division I record for a coach.  He was honored with every distinction the sports industry has to offer, from being the coach to receive Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year Award, to the Associated Press College Football Coach Award, to the NCAA’s Gerald R. Ford Award.  Joe Posnanski spent the last two years of Paterno’s life with him, getting to know the man and his family, and was there as the scandal broke that eventually consumed him.  Written with unprecedented access, Paterno gets inside the mind of one of America’s most brilliant and charismatic coaches.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Joe Posnanski joined Sports Illustrated as a Senior Writer in 2009.  He wrote about sports for The Kansas City Star for sixteen years and was twice named the Best Sports Columnist in America by the Associated Press Sports Editors.  He is the author of three books and has been anthologized widely, including ESPN’s Bestselling College Football Encyclopedia and The Best American Sportswriting.  He lives in Charlotte, North Carolina, with his family.

A Conversation with Lilly Ledbetter, Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond

EVENT:  Lilly Ledbetter, the courageous woman at the center of the historic discrimination case that inspired the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, shares her fight for equal rights in the workplace, and how her determination became a victory for the nation, a story revealed in her new memoir: Grace and Grit: My Fight for Equal Pay and Fairness at Goodyear and Beyond.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  Lilly Ledbetter was born in a house with no running water or electricity in the small town of Possum Trot, Alabama.  She knew that she was destined for something more, and in 1979, Lilly applied for her dream job at the Goodyear tire factory.  Even though the only women she’d seen there were secretaries in the front offices where she’d submitted her application, she got the job—one of the first women hired at the management level.  Though she faced daily discrimination and sexual harassment, Lilly pressed onward, believing that eventually things would change.  Until, nineteen years later, Lilly received an anonymous note revealing that she was making thousands less per year than the men in her position.  Devastated, she filed a sex discrimination case against Goodyear, which she won and then heartbreakingly lost on appeal.  Over the next eight years, her case made it all the way to the Supreme Court, where she lost again: the court ruled that she should have filed suit within 180 days of her first unequal paycheck despite the fact that she had no way of knowing that she was being paid unfairly all those years.  In a dramatic moment, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg read her dissent from the bench, urging Lilly to fight back.  And fight Lilly did, becoming the namesake of President Barack Obama's first official piece of legislation.  Today, she is a tireless advocate for change, traveling the country to urge women and minorities to claim their civil rights.  Both a deeply inspiring memoir and a powerful call to arms, Grace and Grit is the story of a true American icon.

A Conversation with Jeffrey Toobin about his new book The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court

EVENT:  Jeffrey Toobin appears In Conversation for his new Book The Oath: The Obama White House and the Supreme Court on Thursday, September 27, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  From the moment John Roberts, the chief justice of the United States, blundered through the Oath of Office at Barack Obama's inauguration, the relationship between the Supreme Court and the White House has been confrontational.  Both men are young, brilliant, charismatic, charming, determined to change the course of the nation and completely at odds on almost every major constitutional issue.  One is radical; one essentially conservative. The surprise is that Obama is the conservative, a believer in incremental change, compromise, and pragmatism over ideology.  Roberts and his allies on the Court seek to overturn decades of precedent: in short, to undo the ultimate victory FDR achieved in the New Deal.  This ideological war will crescendo during the 2011-2012 term, in which several landmark cases are on the Court's docket most crucially, a challenge to Obama's controversial health-care legislation.  With four new justices joining the Court in just five years, including Obama's appointees Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan, this is a dramatically and historically different Supreme Court, playing for the highest of stakes.  No one is better positioned to chronicle this dramatic tale than Jeffrey Toobin, whose Prize-Winning Bestseller The Nine laid bare the inner workings and conflicts of the Court in meticulous and entertaining detail.  As the nation prepares to vote for President in 2012, the future of the Supreme Court will also be on the ballot.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Jeffrey Toobin is the Bestselling author of The Nine, Too Close to Call, A Vast Conspiracy and The Run of His Life.  He is a Staff Writer at The New Yorker and the Senior Legal Analyst at CNN.  He lives with his family in New York.

Gretchen Rubin In Conversation about Happier at Home

EVENT:  The New York Times Bestselling author Gretchen Rubin appears In Conversation and celebrating the Launch of her new Book Happier at Home: Kiss More, Jump More, Abandon a Project, Read Samuel Johnson, and My Other Experiments in the Practice of Everyday Life on Thursday, September 20, 2012 at 7:00 PM at Unity Temple on The Plaza, Sanctuary, 707 W 47th Street, Kansas City, Missouri 64112.

ABOUT THE BOOK:  One Sunday afternoon, as she unloaded the dishwasher, Gretchen Rubin felt hit by a wave of homesickness.  Homesick—why?  She was standing right in her own kitchen.  She felt homesick, she realized, with love for home itself.  “Of all the elements of a happy life,” she thought, “my home is the most important.”  In a flash, she decided to undertake a new happiness project, and this time, to focus on home.  And what did she want from her home?  A place that calmed her, and energized her.  A place that, by making her feel safe, would free her to take risks.  Also, while Rubin wanted to be happier at home, she wanted to appreciate how much happiness was there already.  So, starting in September (the new January), Rubin dedicated a school year—September through May—to making her home a place of greater simplicity, comfort, and love.  In The Happiness Project, she worked out general theories of happiness.  Here she goes deeper on factors that matter for home, such as possessions, marriage, time, and parenthood. How can she control the cubicle in her pocket?  How might she spotlight her family’s treasured possessions?  And it really was time to replace that dud toaster.  Each month, Rubin tackles a different theme as she experiments with concrete, manageable resolutions—and this time, she coaxes her family to try some resolutions, as well. With her signature blend of memoir, science, philosophy, and experimentation, Rubin’s passion for her subject jumps off the page, and reading just a few chapters of this book will inspire readers to find more happiness in their own lives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Gretchen Rubin is the author of several Books, including the New York Times Bestseller, The Happiness Project.  Gretchen started her career in law, and she was clerking for Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor when she realized that really wanted to be a writer.  Raised in Kansas City, she lives in New York City with her husband and two daughters.

In Cronkite, Douglas Brinkley presents the definitive, revealing biography of an American legend: renowned news anchor Walter Cronkite.  Brinkley has drawn upon recently disclosed letters, diaries, and other artifacts at the recently opened Cronkite Archive to bring detail and depth to this deeply personal portrait.  He also interviewed nearly two hundred of Cronkite's closest friends and colleagues, using their voices to instill dignity and humanity in this study of one of America's most beloved and trusted public figures.
