Sheila Kemper Dietrich will Present her original Children’s Book, Sammie & Sax in the Land of Quinoa: The Search for a Balanced Meal

EVENT OVERVIEW:  Sheila Kemper Dietrich will Present her original Children's Book Sammie & Sax in the Land of Quinoa: The Search for a Balanced Meal, the first in a series of children’s adventure books teaching about nutrition.

Sheila will appear with the illustrator, Tim Foss, to present this new book and the innovative concept behind it. Joining them will be Dr. Ann Davis and Dr. Sarah Hampl, co-directors of the Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyle and Nutrition; Kit Smith, Pre-School Teacher at Pembroke Hill School; and Vivien Jennings, Founder and President of Rainy Day Books, to discuss the importance of addressing our children’s health, childhood obesity, and why Kidliga—right-sized dishware for children and the Sammie & Sax adventure book—are important tools for children and their families in leading healthier lives.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:  Sheila Kemper Dietrich is a well-known leader from Kansas City. She was a Kansas City Parks Commissioner for 8 years under Mayor Emanuel Cleaver. Her career in Kansas City was as the head of Trust and Wealth Management for UMB Bank. It was as the Executive Director of the American Heart Association in Denver, however, that she realized how significant the obesity epidemic had become and sought to find a solution that works. Sheila is the Founder and CEO of Livliga and its children’s line—Kidliga. She is the author of the book, Sammie & Sax in the Land of Quinoa: The Search for a Balanced Meal. The inspiration for Kidliga and the book comes from her three children and the stories she used to tell them when they were little. She regularly made up Kingdom of Good stories at bedtime, transporting her three children to magical lands, teaching lessons about problem solving and overcoming challenges. Sammie & Sax in the Land of Quinoa is inspired out of those family story times in their home.

ABOUT THE ILLUSTRATOR:  As a kid, Timothy Foss preferred art supply stores over toy stores, and could spend hours choosing a pencil. He grew up, attended St. Olaf College, discovered his love for ceramics, and moved to Seattle to begin a decade-long career that culminated in a series he called Poor Man's Porcelain. Examples of this work can be found in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Fine Art-Deyoung, Arizona State University, and the Museum of Contemporary Craft-Portland. He received an MFA at the University of Colorado, and realized that storytelling guided all of his work. Now he feels right at home as the Chief Creative Officer for Livliga-designing ceramics and building the visual story of Sammie and Sax. His 3-year-old son, Eli, has tested all of the contents of this book (he approves). You can find his family in Minneapolis curled up on a chair somewhere reading books.

ABOUT Sammie & Sax in the Land of Quinoa: The Book tells the story of two curious kids, Sammie and Sax, and their dog Rhubarb as they go on a magical adventure in search of a balanced meal. The accompanying Kidliga dishware features these characters along with specifically sized icons to represent the appropriate amount for each food group as designated by the USDA/ In addition to the dishware and the children’s book, the Livliga website offers activities and recipes that can be downloaded to engage the whole family in learning about healthy eating in an adventurous and interactive way.
