Description

The OK End of Funny Town won the BOA Short Fiction Prize. It is the second fiction collection by Mark Polanzak. His first collection, the hybrid fiction/memoir POP! Was published by Stillhouse Press in 2016.

Witty and imaginative, The OK End of Funny Town draws on tropes from science fiction and magical realism to tell stories about human relationships. Though the details are out of this world, the stories reveal true-to-life stories of anxieties, alienation, and attempts to form lasting connections.

Polanza’s style is comparable to BOA authors Zach Powers and Molly Reid, as well as authors Aimee Bender, Karen Russell, Dave Eggers, George Saunders, Haruki Murakami, and Kelly Link.

BOA Short Fiction Prize winners have been strong sellers in recent seasons and have seen outstanding attention from the NYTBR, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Booklist, et al.

Polanzak’s previous collection POP! received strong reviews in Kirkus, Boston Globe, and Small Press Book Review.

Mark Polanzak is an Associate Professor teaching writing and literature at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. A former co-editor of Sonora Review, he is the founding editor of the literary magazine draft: the journal of progress and a regular contributor/producer for its spinoff literary podcast The Fail Safe (www.thefailsafepodcast.com).

Local media in the Boston area expressed an interest in interviewing Mark around the publication of The OK End of Funny Town after the BOA Short Fiction Prize was announced.

Polanzak’s stories have appeared in The Southern Review, Tahoma Literary Review, Adirondack Review, Best American Nonrequired Reading 2017, and elsewhere.
